You may have heard there are two different types of flu vaccine being used in this year's flu vaccination programme for the adult population.
The first type is called a quadrivalent vaccine and contains four types of influenza. If you are aged 18 to 64, this is the vaccine you will receive. This vaccine was one of the types that we used last year and is the one recommended by NHS England for use in the 18 to 64 age group.
The second type is called an adjuvanted trivalent vaccine. This vaccine contains three types of influenza plus an adjuvant, which makes the body's immune response stronger. This vaccine is new to the UK this flu season and is the one recommended by NHS England as the most effective for use in the over 65 age group.
Having two different types of vaccine in use has caused the start of the our flu vaccination service to be staggered. Here at Broadway Pharmacy we received our quadrivalent vaccines last week and were therefore able to start vaccinating the 18 to 64 age group. Our adjuvanted trivalent vaccines are due to arrive next week ready to start vaccinating the over 65 age group on Wednesday 26th September.
One thing that hasn't changed about our flu vaccination service is that there's no appointment necessary, six days a week!
